Health Insurance Basics
What is the difference between in-network and out-of-network care?
In-network care is provided by doctors and hospitals that have contracted with your insurance company. In-network care is covered at lower cost-sharing. Out-of-network care is provided by doctors and hospitals that have not contracted with your insurance company. Out-of-network care is covered at higher cost-sharing or not covered at all.
Key Points
- In-network: providers contracted with your insurance company
- In-network care: covered at lower cost-sharing
- Out-of-network: providers not contracted with your insurance company
- Out-of-network care: higher cost-sharing or not covered (except emergencies)
