ACA Marketplace Health Insurance
The government marketplace gives you access to subsidized coverage - but navigating metal tiers, income limits, and enrollment windows is confusing. We cut through it.
The Four Metal Tiers Explained
All ACA plans cover the same 10 essential benefits. The tiers only differ in how costs are split between you and the insurer. Lower premium = higher out-of-pocket when you use care.
| Tier | Monthly Premium | Typical Deductible | Your Coinsurance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Lowest | $6,000-$8,000 | 40% | Healthy people who rarely use care |
| Silver | Moderate | $3,000-$5,000 | 30% | Most people - especially those eligible for cost-sharing reductions |
| Gold | Higher | $1,000-$2,500 | 20% | People with regular medical needs |
| Platinum | Highest | $0-$500 | 10% | People with chronic conditions or high expected costs |
* Deductible and coinsurance figures are approximate 2024 averages. Actual plan details vary by carrier and state.
ACA Subsidies: Who Qualifies?
The ACA offers two types of financial assistance: Premium Tax Credits (PTCs) that reduce your monthly premium, and Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) that lower your deductible and out-of-pocket costs on Silver plans.
Thanks to the American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act, subsidy eligibility has been expanded. There is no longer a hard income cutoff at 400% FPL - instead, no one pays more than 8.5% of their household income for a benchmark Silver plan.
2024 Income Ranges for Premium Tax Credits
Premium Tax Credits (PTCs)
Applied directly to your monthly premium. You can choose to take the full credit upfront (lowering your monthly bill) or claim it on your tax return. Available on all metal tiers.
Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs)
Only available on Silver plans. If your income is between 100%-250% FPL, you get a Silver plan that acts like a Gold or Platinum plan - lower deductibles, lower copays, lower out-of-pocket maximum.
Important: CSR Tip
If you qualify for CSRs, you MUST enroll in a Silver plan to get them. Enrolling in a Bronze plan means you lose the cost-sharing reductions even if you qualify.
When Can You Enroll?
Open Enrollment
The annual window when anyone can enroll in or change their ACA plan. Coverage starts January 1 if you enroll by December 15, or February 1 if you enroll December 16 - January 15.
Special Enrollment Period
If you have a qualifying life event, you have 60 days to enroll. Qualifying events include: losing job-based coverage, getting married or divorced, having a baby, moving to a new coverage area, or gaining citizenship.
ACA Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ACA marketplace?
The ACA marketplace (also called the Health Insurance Marketplace or Exchange) is a government-run platform where individuals and families can shop for and enroll in ACA-compliant health insurance plans. Open enrollment typically runs November 1 through January 15.
Who qualifies for ACA subsidies?
Individuals and families with household income between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) may qualify for premium tax credits. For 2024, that's roughly $14,580 to $58,320 for a single person. The American Rescue Plan expanded subsidies - many people earning above 400% FPL now qualify too.
What are the ACA metal tiers?
ACA plans come in four metal tiers: Bronze (lowest premium, highest out-of-pocket), Silver (moderate premium, cost-sharing reductions available), Gold (higher premium, lower out-of-pocket), and Platinum (highest premium, lowest out-of-pocket). Catastrophic plans are available to people under 30 or with hardship exemptions.
Can I get ACA coverage outside open enrollment?
Yes - if you have a qualifying life event (job loss, marriage, birth of a child, move to a new area), you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that lasts 60 days from the event.
Is ACA insurance the same as Obamacare?
Yes. 'Obamacare' is the informal name for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). ACA marketplace plans and Obamacare plans are the same thing.
What does ACA insurance cover?
All ACA plans must cover 10 essential health benefits: ambulatory care, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use, prescription drugs, rehabilitative services, laboratory services, preventive care, and pediatric services.
