How Medigap Covers Hospice Care

If you have chosen the Traditional Medicare path, Medicare Part A covers hospice care. But even with Part A, there are still some out-of-pocket costs, like copayments for prescription drugs and respite care. That is where a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan comes in.

The supplement decision comes AFTER you choose Traditional Medicare - it's a component of the Traditional path, not an alternative to Advantage. If you choose Traditional Medicare, a supplement fills the gaps by law. All standardized Medigap plans (A through N) cover your Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayments. This means that if you have a Medigap policy, it will pay the 5% coinsurance for inpatient respite care and the copayments (up to $5) for prescription drugs for pain and symptom management.
