The Life Insurance Medical Exam: What Happens, What They Test, and How to Prepare
Most life insurance policies over $500,000 require a medical exam. Here is exactly what happens, what they test for, and how to prepare to get the best possible rate.
The life insurance medical exam is one of the most misunderstood parts of the application process. Many people dread it. But if you are in good health, it is your opportunity to qualify for the best possible rates. Here is exactly what to expect.
What the Exam Includes
A standard life insurance medical exam includes: height and weight measurement, blood pressure and pulse, blood draw (testing for cholesterol, glucose, kidney function, liver function, HIV, and other markers), urine sample (testing for drugs, protein, glucose, and other markers), and a health questionnaire.
How to Prepare
To prepare for the best results: fast for 8-12 hours before the exam (water is fine), avoid alcohol for 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, get a good night's sleep, drink plenty of water the day before, and schedule the exam in the morning when blood pressure is typically lower.
What the Results Mean
The exam results are used to assign you to a rate class: Preferred Plus (best rates), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, Substandard (rated), or Decline. Each step down in rate class increases your premium. The difference between Preferred Plus and Standard can be 50-100% more in premium.
No-Exam Life Insurance
If you prefer to skip the exam, no-exam life insurance is available. Simplified issue policies ask health questions but require no exam. Coverage amounts are typically limited to $500,000-$1,000,000. Premiums are higher than fully underwritten policies for healthy applicants.
