Own-Occupation vs Any-Occupation: The Definition That Determines Whether You Get Paid

The disability definition in your policy determines whether you collect benefits. Own-occupation is the gold standard. Here is why it matters and how to make sure you have the right coverage.

The most important words in your disability insurance policy are the ones that define disability. The definition determines whether you collect benefits when you cannot work. Most people do not read this definition until they file a claim — and by then it is too late.

Own-Occupation Definition

Own-occupation disability insurance pays benefits if you cannot perform the material duties of your specific occupation, even if you can work in another capacity. A surgeon who loses the use of their hands is disabled under own-occupation even if they can teach medicine. This is the gold standard definition.

Any-Occupation Definition

Any-occupation disability insurance only pays benefits if you cannot perform any occupation for which you are reasonably suited by education, training, or experience. A surgeon who loses the use of their hands is not disabled under any-occupation if they can teach medicine. This definition is much harder to meet.

Modified Own-Occupation

Many policies use a modified own-occupation definition: own-occupation for the first 2-5 years, then any-occupation after that. This is a compromise that provides strong protection early in a disability but may cut off benefits later.

Who Needs Own-Occupation

Own-occupation is most important for: physicians, dentists, attorneys, and other professionals whose income depends on specific skills, high-income earners who would take a significant pay cut working in another capacity, and anyone who has invested years in specialized training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is own-occupation disability insurance more expensive?
Yes, own-occupation disability insurance costs more than any-occupation because it is more likely to pay benefits. For professionals, the extra cost is typically worth it.
Can I get own-occupation disability insurance through my employer?
Most employer group disability plans use any-occupation or modified own-occupation definitions. Individual disability insurance from an independent agent is typically the only way to get true own-occupation coverage.
